Dear Floyd Family,

I am writing to inform you of an incident at Floyd that resulted in a building evacuation today.  During physical education class, a ball accidentally hit a sprinkler inside the gym which caused water to pour out of the ceiling.  The release of the sprinkler system set off the fire alarm although no smoke or fire was ever present.  Students evacuated safely and orderly.  Emergency maintenance personnel from the Cobb County School District arrived, including Public Safety.

Due to the release of standing water from the sprinkler system, a peculiar, harmless odor was emitted, partially due to oil and water inside the sprinkler system pipes.  A few students who had been in the gym did complain of irritation and have been examined.

Unfortunately, the sprinkler released a large amount of water onto the gym floor until the valve could be deactivated.  As a result of the water damage to the wooden gym floor and sprinkler system repairs underway, no activity is taking place inside the gym until further notice.  The eighth grade dance will have to take place inside our cafeteria on May 6.

Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.  We are happy to return to a normal schedule with the conclusion of Milestone Assessments.  We appreciate your support in more ways than you know.

Sincerely,

Dr. Teresa Hargrett

Principal
